The Bronde Blvd Difference

Seamless Color,

No Hard Lines

Root smudges and color melts are two of the most requested finishing techniques at Bronde Blvd., and for good reason. Both are designed to eliminate the harsh, obvious demarcation lines that can appear as hair grows or as multiple colors meet at different lengths.
01

Extends Your Color's Life

Root smudges in particular are commonly added to highlights or balayage services to soften the root and push your next appointment out by several weeks.
02

Subtle to Multidimensional

From a barely-there root blend to a full color melt with multiple tones, both techniques scale to whatever level of drama or restraint you're after.

The Process

Two Services,

One Seamless Result

01 Root Blending

Root Smudge

A root smudge applies a semi-permanent or demi-permanent color to the roots and gently blends it into the existing color. The result is a soft, seamless transition that eliminates the hard line between your natural root and your highlighted or colored hair.

How it's done

Color is applied at the root zone and blended downward using a brush technique that diffuses the line — not covers it. The result feels natural, not painted.

Root smudge vs shadow root

A shadow root uses a darker shade at the root for deliberate depth and contrast. A root smudge uses a color that closely matches your natural root for the most seamless, invisible blend.

Ideal for: Clients who've had highlights or balayage and want a softer root transition — extending the life of their color and reducing grow-out visibility.

02 Root-to-Tip Blending

Color Melt

A color melt blends multiple shades seamlessly from root to tip — creating a stunning multidimensional transition that can range from subtle and tonal to bold and high-contrast, depending on the colors chosen.

How it's done

Unlike balayage — which is freehand painting focused on mid-lengths and ends — a color melt involves precise, careful blending of two or more shades across the entire length of the hair.

Color melt vs balayage

Balayage focuses on the surface of the hair with a sweeping motion. A color melt is a more controlled blending of shades from root to tip — the transition is more even and structured.

Ideal for: Clients who want a multidimensional color result with a beautifully blended root-to-tip transition — subtle or dramatic, depending on the shades selected.

Investment

How Much Does

It Cost?

Pricing for root smudges and color melts depends on your hair's length, density, and the complexity of the blending required. Both services are fully customized; no two appointments are priced identically.
Free consultation required. Your colorist will assess your current color, your desired result, and give you an exact quote before any work begins.
Root smudges are commonly added as an enhancement to a highlights or balayage service for a small additional cost. Your stylist will let you know if it makes sense for your appointment.
Longevity

How Long Does

It Last?

Root smudges typically use semi-permanent or dempermanent color, which gradually fades over 4 to 8 weeks — fading naturally and gracefully without creating a new harsh line as it goes.
Color melts using permanent color last significantly longer and grow out at the same rate as any color service — but because the transition is designed to blend, the grow-out is far less noticeable than a foil or all-over service.
Because both techniques are designed around seamless blending, they're two of the lowest-maintenance color services we offer, perfect for clients who want to extend time between full appointments.
Extension Care

How To Protect

Your Color

🧴

Color-Safe Shampoo

Semi and demi-permanent color fades faster than permanent. Sulfate-free shampoo is essential. Sulfates will strip your root smudge noticeably faster and reduce the seamless effect you paid for.
🚿

Wash Less Often

Every shampoo removes a small amount of color. Washing every 2–3 days instead of daily and using dry shampoo in between- can significantly extend the life of your root smudge or color melt.
🌡️

Keep Heat Low

Excessive heat opens the hair cuticle and accelerates color loss. Use a heat protectant every time and keep styling tools below 350°F to maintain the smoothness and vibrancy of your color.
☀️

Protect from UV Exposure

Sun bleaches colors, especially the warmer, softer tones used in root smudges. Apply a UV-protectant leave-in or wear a hat on days spent outdoors to preserve your blend.
💧

Use Cool Water to Rinse

Hot water opens the hair cuticle and pulls pigment out. Rinsing with cool or lukewarm water seals the cuticle, locks in color, and helps your root smudge or color melt last noticeably longer.

Refresh with a Gloss

As your root smudge fades, a toning gloss can refresh the warmth and tone before it's time for a full service. Quick, affordable, and effective. Ask your stylist if it's right for your next visit.
