How it's done

Color is applied at the root zone and blended downward using a brush technique that diffuses the line — not covers it. The result feels natural, not painted.

Root smudges typically use semi-permanent or dempermanent color, which gradually fades over 4 to 8 weeks — fading naturally and gracefully without creating a new harsh line as it goes.
Color melts using permanent color last significantly longer and grow out at the same rate as any color service — but because the transition is designed to blend, the grow-out is far less noticeable than a foil or all-over service.

Color-Safe Shampoo

Semi and demi-permanent color fades faster than permanent. Sulfate-free shampoo is essential. Sulfates will strip your root smudge noticeably faster and reduce the seamless effect you paid for.

Wash Less Often

Every shampoo removes a small amount of color. Washing every 2–3 days instead of daily and using dry shampoo in between- can significantly extend the life of your root smudge or color melt.

Keep Heat Low

Excessive heat opens the hair cuticle and accelerates color loss. Use a heat protectant every time and keep styling tools below 350°F to maintain the smoothness and vibrancy of your color.

Protect from UV Exposure

Sun bleaches colors, especially the warmer, softer tones used in root smudges. Apply a UV-protectant leave-in or wear a hat on days spent outdoors to preserve your blend.
